Tim S. Murphy - Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy focuses around supporting and mentoring students to develop essential skills through teaching a solid foundation of art and design fundamentals. I encourage exploration and growth while equipping students with the skills needed to successfully execute their own projects and translate complex concepts into their own personal expressions. I stimulate productive critical dialogue within the classroom as well as in organized group critiques. I believe that learning how to make art and developing creative skills is an individual experience and that some of the best insights and constructive criticisms often come from other students. This is why beginning with the first undergraduate drawing, painting, and design classes I taught in 1996, I emphasize in all my classes the importance of students developing the ability to discuss their own work and their classmates’ work in meaningful ways. I use my professional knowledge as a source to draw from for inspiration and examples to keep the classroom experience relevant for the students beyond the assignment at hand. My passion for the artwork I create and the teaching process fuel my enthusiasm in class. My broad range of professional experience enables me to empathize with students with varying interests and goals.
